Extraordinary Opportunity - "An Evening with Loudon Wainwright III"

"Any chance to visit Charlie Poole's home town of Spray (Eden), NC, and celebrate the greatness of her native son is one to be taken" --- so says Loudon Wainwright III, winner of this year's Best Traditional Folk Grammy Award with his album "High, Wide and Handsome: the Charlie Poole Project".

And celebrating the greatness of Spray's native son is just what he will be doing on Saturday, September 25. He has agreed to do a benefit performance at the picturesque Governor Morehead Park in Spray, directly across the street from the textile mills where famed banjoist Charlie Poole worked between his rambles.

"An Evening with Loudon Wainwright III" will be an evening of national caliber entertainment with good food to make it complete - Fuzzy's of Madison will be catering a barbeque supper, all included in the $25 ticket price. Wainwright will be coming fresh from a performance as part of the Duke University concert series.

The proceeds are to help Piedmont Folk Legacies, parent of the Charlie Poole Music Festival, in its effort to save the huge historic Nantucket Mill by turning it into the National Banjo Center, and to help the park itself deal with the crumbling foundation wall of the area's very first textile mill. Wainwright requests that all proceeds should remain in Spray out of respect for Charlie Poole.

Gates will open on 5:00 p.m. on September 25 and the barbeque will be served at 6:00 .

The opening act at 7:00 p.m. will be Kinney Rorrer's widely acclaimed New North Carolina Ramblers. Wainwright will take the stage at 8:00 with his act that he has taken all over the US and Canada since Grammy night.

Tickets at $25 each will be sold on line at www.charlie-poole.com through Friday, September 17, or can be ordered with a check to Piedmont Folk Legacies, PO Box 867, Eden, NC 27289. A table for eight can be reserved for $200. No tickets will be sold at the gate. For information, call 336-623-1043 or 336-627-0816.

We hope to see you soon at YOUR Chamber of Commerce!

Fill the BackPacks a Huge Success!

We would like to sincerely thank all the people who supported the "Fill the BackPacks" drive. Pete Crouch with Eden Drug started this drive and had 2,000 backpacks to fill up with school supplies. We worked with him on getting donations and shopping for the school supplies. Filled backpacks were given out to every school child who came by Eden Drug to pick one up; over 1200 have been given out so far. Listed below are the ones who donated money or school supplies:

Gildan News & Record | Dallas Services Pizza Hut | Terri Faunce Sheetz
Marjorie Lawson Sonic Drive-In | Pat Marsh Wal-Mart | MillerCoors

Also, thanks to the many anonymous people who donated money while we were shopping for school supplies at Wal-Mart. We appreciate everyone who helped in any way with donating or helping to fill these backpacks.

Pete still has 500 backpacks left so if you could donate some school supplies, he might possibly be able to fill these for give away. If you would rather donate money, we will have someone do the shopping for you. You can drop off at the Eden Chamber of Commerce or Eden Drug. Thank you for helping!

This gala event is a way to highlight the wide variety of quality offerings by the cooks, bakers, and artists in and around Eden.

Chamber Night with Greensboro Grasshoppers!

Thirty people attended Chamber Night with the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday, August 21. Everyone enjoyed a buffet meal of hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken wings & drummettes, baked beans, coleslaw, cookies, drinks and all the trimmings before the game began.

We would like to think that our wild cheering helped the Greensboro Grasshoppers win against the Kannapolis Intimidators. A spectacular fireworks display ended a most enjoyable night.
